IRCTC for Foreigners in 2026: The Working Guide (Signup to Booking)

Why IRCTC matters

Indian trains are cheaper, more comfortable, and more atmospheric than flights for journeys under 800 km. Every Vande Bharat, Rajdhani, and Shatabdi is bookable on IRCTC. Third-party sites (MakeMyTrip, 12Go) work but add a 3 to 10 percent markup.

How to sign up as a foreigner

  1. Go to irctc.co.in. Click Register.
  2. Choose 'International User' at the top.
  3. Fill: name (exactly as on passport), passport number, nationality, date of birth, email, and Indian mobile number.
  4. If you don't have an Indian mobile yet, use a friend's, hotel's, or eSIM number.
  5. Verify email and mobile. Login credentials work within 30 minutes.

Payment methods that actually work

  • UPI: works if you have an Indian bank account or a foreign-facing UPI app (PhonePe International, Cheq). Cheapest, fastest.
  • Indian debit/credit card: works.
  • International card via net banking: works with SBI, HDFC, and ICICI net banking, and Razorpay checkout.
  • International card direct: 40 to 60 percent success rate. Often blocked by IRCTC's anti-fraud filters.
  • PayPal, Google Pay direct: not supported for IRCTC.
  • Cash: not possible online. Available at station reservation counters.
If your international card fails 2 to 3 times, IRCTC may lock your account for 24 hours. Use 12Go or MakeMyTrip's tourist ticket service instead; they take any card and charge a small markup.

Foreign Tourist Quota (FTQ)

Foreigners can access a reserved quota on major routes. Available at the New Delhi, Mumbai CST, Chennai Central, and Kolkata Howrah tourist bureaus (in person). Pay in USD, EUR, GBP, or INR. Same-day and next-day tickets often available even when online shows 'waitlist'.

Booking tips

  • Book 60 days ahead: the Advance Reservation Period. Tourist routes fill in 2 to 3 days.
  • Tatkal (emergency) opens 24 hours before travel: 10 AM for AC classes, 11 AM for non-AC. Login early, be at your keyboard.
  • Waitlisted (WL): CNF (confirmed) or RAC (reservation against cancellation) are travel-ok; pure WL means no seat.
  • Check PNR status at irctc.co.in with your 10-digit PNR number 4 hours before departure.

At the station

  1. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before departure. Big stations are chaotic.
  2. Show your PDF ticket + matching passport at the ticket check.
  3. Find your coach on the platform monitors (typical layout: Engine + AC coaches first, sleeper coaches middle, general at the back).
  4. Board only your reserved coach. Trains DO leave on time; don't cut it close.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreigners book IRCTC in 2026?

Yes. Register as International User on irctc.co.in with your passport. Verification is 30 minutes. Book up to 60 days ahead.

Why does my international card keep failing on IRCTC?

IRCTC's fraud filters are strict on international cards. Try UPI, Indian net banking, or a third-party site (12Go, MakeMyTrip) instead.

What is the Foreign Tourist Quota?

A reserved seat quota for foreigners on major routes. Book in person at New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, or Kolkata tourist bureaus. Often available when online shows waitlisted.

Best class for overnight India trains?

2AC or 3AC for comfort and safety. Sleeper class (SL) is cheaper but not recommended for foreigners overnight.

How early to book Indian trains?

60 days ahead for popular tourist routes. Same-day Tatkal is available but requires timing precision. Foreign Tourist Quota gives you flexibility.
