Kashmir in June is worth every rupee. The Srinagar houseboat scam isn't.
Why June, and what June looks like
June in Kashmir is 12 to 22 degrees C in Srinagar (perfect walking weather), 8 to 18 in Pahalgam (sweater at night), and can drop to 2 degrees at Gulmarg's gondola second station in early morning. The valleys are fully green, the rivers are running, the tulip garden closes end of May but the Mughal gardens (Shalimar, Nishat) are in bloom.
Post-Article 370 tourism has surged. Book everything two months ahead in peak June and July. I booked six weeks out and paid a 15-20% premium on everything.
Dal Lake vs Nagin Lake: pick Nagin
Every travel blog puts you on a Dal Lake houseboat. Dal is the famous lake, closer to the city, and every houseboat operator has a Dal presence. Do not book Dal for your first night. Dal in June is packed: 500+ shikaras, floating vegetable markets that are now more tourist-photo than actual market, and a permanent low-level engine noise from the maintenance boats.
Nagin Lake is a 15-minute drive from Dal. Same houseboats, same operators (in fact many operate on both lakes), fraction of the boat traffic, silent at night. My Nagin houseboat's dawn view of the Zabarwan mountains was the visual highlight of the whole trip.
The Srinagar houseboat scam, and how to avoid it
The scam is not on price directly. It's on quality of boat you get for the price quoted. I booked online through a well-reviewed aggregator for ₹9,000 a night on a 'deluxe' Dal Lake houseboat. What I got: a boat in obvious decline (leaking taps, cracked windows, water pressure gone), on the loudest strip of Ghat 5, with a promised 'exclusive dinner' that was in fact a communal dinner shared with two other rooms of guests.
I complained to the manager (a man called Wasim, on-site). He was apologetic and offered to move me to their Nagin Lake sister property for the same price the next morning. That new boat, run by his cousin Ali Hussain, was everything the first had promised: my own boat, silent, spotless, three-course dinner served on the deck for ₹500 extra.
Lesson: book direct via WhatsApp with a Kashmiri operator who lives in Srinagar (not a Delhi aggregator). Ask for a photo of the room taken this week. Confirm Nagin, not Dal, unless you've seen the specific Dal boat's recent reviews.

The eight days
- Day 1: Land Srinagar. Old city walk (Jama Masjid, Naqshbandi Sahib shrine). Kahwa at Ahdoos.
- Day 2: Move to Nagin Lake houseboat. Shikara at sunset. Waza dinner on board.
- Day 3: Day trip to Sonamarg (2h drive). Snow at Thajiwas glacier if June early. Back to Nagin by 6pm.
- Day 4: Mughal gardens (Shalimar, Nishat, Chashme Shahi). Evening at Hazratbal shrine at sunset.
- Day 5: Drive to Pahalgam (3h). Check into Chalet Suites (₹4,500 a night, best value in Pahalgam).
- Day 6: Aru + Betaab + Chandanwari day trip. Do not miss Betaab Valley in the golden hour.
- Day 7: Drive to Gulmarg (5h via Srinagar). Gondola both phases. Kongdoori peak walk if snow permits.
- Day 8: Gulmarg to Srinagar (1.5h). Fly out evening.
What I'd redo
- Nagin Lake from night one. Skip the Dal night entirely.
- Book direct via WhatsApp with a Kashmiri operator, not a Delhi aggregator. Ali Hussain's boat in Nagin was excellent; ask any Srinagar homestay for a Nagin operator.
- Add one day to Pahalgam, cut one day from Srinagar. Aru and Betaab deserve unhurried mornings.
- Skip Chandanwari unless you're doing the Amarnath yatra. It's the yatra base camp; without pilgrimage context it's a parking lot.
- Book Gulmarg gondola tickets online the night before. The counter line is 90 minutes.
- Try a wazwan meal at a Kashmiri Pandit family's kitchen (Wangnoo, Sheikh Bagh) rather than a hotel restaurant. Better food, cheaper, longer lunch.
