I did the Jaisalmer camel safari in October. The single-night version is a scam.
Sam Sand Dunes is a tourist trap
Sam Sand Dunes has been the default Jaisalmer camel safari for 20 years because it's close to the city and the dunes are visually spectacular. Both those things are true. Everything else is a mess. When I arrived at 4:30pm there were 47 tour buses in the parking lot. Forty-seven. There were speakers playing Bollywood remixes at every camp. The dunes themselves are trampled, littered, and by sunset there are more selfie sticks than camels.
I paid ₹1,800 which got me: a 40-minute camel ride, dinner in a plastic-chair 'tent camp' with 300 other people, one performance of Rajasthani folk music that had to shout over the neighbouring camp's music, and a shared tent with three strangers. I slept in my jeans, ate half the dinner, and left at 6am.
Khuri is where you actually want to go
Khuri village is 45 km southwest of Jaisalmer, in the direction opposite Sam. No buses. No day-trippers. My guest house pointed me to Sohan (a local camel guide, WhatsApp only, 94xx-xxx-xxx redacted here for his privacy, ask any Khuri homestay), and he charged ₹4,500 for two nights, one camel each, bedding, three meals a day, an actual musician playing at OUR camp, and a real overnight in the dunes under stars.
The two-night version matters because the first afternoon you ride out (2 hours), you sleep in the dunes, second morning you ride to a different set of dunes (2 hours), rest through the afternoon heat, and the second night is the one where you actually settle. On a single night you get the arrival tension and never the settle.

For comparison, the Sam night cost me ₹1,800 plus ₹600 for the taxi round trip, so ₹2,400 total for something I actively regretted. The Khuri safari cost ₹5,700 for something I'd do again next month.
What went wrong
I booked Sam first because I trusted my hostel's recommendation. The hostels in Jaisalmer fort get commissions from Sam operators; nobody was going to steer me to Khuri because there's no kickback. If I could redo the trip I'd ask a Khuri homestay directly. There are three: Khuri Guest House, Badal House, and Mama's Resort. All three have their own camel guides.
What I'd redo
- Skip Sam completely. Not for one hour. Not for the 'photo'. Skip it.
- Book Khuri directly. Not through a Jaisalmer fort hostel or an agent. WhatsApp a Khuri homestay two weeks before your trip.
- Two nights minimum. One night is not a safari, it's a photo op.
- October to February only. April to September is unsafe (heat). March is doable but hot by 10am.
- Bring a light sleeping-bag liner even in October. Desert nights hit 8 degrees C and the blankets are wool but scratchy.
