I got to the Varanasi ghats at 4am for sunrise. Here's what actually happens.

Why 4am, and not 5:30 like most guides say

The Subah-e-Banaras (dawn programme) at Assi Ghat starts at 5am with Vedic chants, then the aarti and cultural performance until 6:30am. Everyone recommends being there by 5. That is fine but by 4:45 the ghat is already full and the boats are already doubling in price.

At 4am the ghats are quiet. Genuinely quiet. Bells are ringing at temples but only a handful of pilgrims are on the steps. The boatmen are drinking chai at Sindhia Ghat. You can walk the ghats end to end (Assi to Rajghat is about 5 km if you don't stop, but you will stop 20 times) without being asked to buy a single thing. Then when the crowd arrives at 5, you're already positioned.

Boat prices before and after 6am

I hired Ramu at 4:15am from Assi Ghat for a two-hour sunrise row: ₹500 total. He rowed me upstream to Panchganga Ghat, across to the sandbank on the eastern shore for a walk, back down past Manikarnika (kept a respectful distance, no photos of the burning pyres, ever), and back to Assi. The Ganga was mirror-glass, the sun rose behind fog at 5:52am, and the crowds only started at Dashashwamedh around 5:40.

By 6:15am the same route costs ₹1,500 to ₹2,000. By 7am, ₹2,500 and every boat is shared. If you want your own boat for sunrise, be at Assi by 4:30 at the latest. Ramu was on Assi Ghat every morning I was in Varanasi, at boat number 47 with a blue tarpaulin. Any local guest house can WhatsApp him.

Which ghat, and why not Dashashwamedh

Dashashwamedh is the famous one. It's where the evening aarti is spectacular and it's what every photo you've seen of Varanasi shows. It's also permanently jammed after 6am, day and night. Do the evening aarti there (be seated by 5:15pm to get a step spot) and then never again in the daylight.

For sunrise, Assi Ghat is quieter, well-lit, has the Subah-e-Banaras programme, and is close to guest houses in the Bengali Tola area. Panchganga Ghat further north is even quieter but you need a boat to reach it easily.

What went wrong on day one

Day one I stayed in a fancier hotel in Cantonment (10 km from the ghats). I took an Ola at 4:30am to reach for the 5am aarti. Ola cancelled after 15 minutes. The next one took another 20. I arrived at 5:35am, missed the Vedic chants, paid ₹1,200 for a shared boat, and never quite settled into the morning.

Day two I moved to Rashmi Guest House in the Bengali Tola (₹1,800 a night, four minutes walk to Assi Ghat, no lift and no AC but the terrace has the best sunset view I've seen in India). Zero transport hassle. Best mistake I fixed on this trip.

What I'd redo

1. Book a guest house in the old city (Bengali Tola, Assi, Godowlia). Walk everywhere. Skip Cantonment hotels no matter how much better their reviews look.
2. Be at Assi Ghat by 4:30am for sunrise. Not 5. Not 5:15.
3. Blue Lassi (near Kashi Vishwanath) opens at 4:30am and sells the best lassi I have ever had. ₹80 for a clay cup with saffron and pistachio. Go before your boat, not after.
4. Skip Manikarnika photos entirely. Skip a Manikarnika 'guide' who offers to explain the cremations for ₹500. It is inappropriate and locals will call it out.
5. Book the evening aarti seat at Dashashwamedh by 5:15pm sharp. It fills fast. Do not do Assi's evening aarti; it's small.
